FACES IAP a sustainability

Water Factories Sinaloa, IAP (FACES IAP), is a non-profit organization, was founded in 2009, with the purpose of restoring and conserving the vegetation cover of the hydrological basin of the Sanalona dam, starting its work and working together with the inhabitants of the Ejido Imala in Sinaloa; The work is currently expanding, trying to cover all the communities settled around the Sanalona dam.

During the month of January Eleven Rivers staff accompanied the project managers of Waterworks on a tour to see the main activities of the organization:

  • Reproduction of endemic plants of the region in nursery for later reforestation. Its purpose is to recover the forests that have been destroyed by the immoderate logging, also, to give solidity to the soil and to avoid its erosion by wind and mainly by the rains.

  • Construction of works of conservation and reclamation of soils (Filtrantes dams of gabions and adapted stone). Its purpose is to reduce the speed of rainwater flowing through streams, by impacting the water against a filtering dam, it passes through the stones and leaves the largest amount of sediment deposited, which serves to make the vessel of the dam Sanalona does not continue to drench, therefore we recover soil and prevent rainwater from continuing to erode and destroy the soil. The moisture retained in the filtering dams, allows it to be infiltrated to the subsoil and to benefit the levels of the wells and norias of the zone.

  • Training courses in environmental education and productive issues. The purpose is to create a culture of environmental and ecological conservation of the region and that it be adopted by children, youth and people of communities.

Training in productive issues is aimed at providing tools that allow technicians to optimize production processes of the local inhabitants of the communities, which translates into an extra income generated by the family.

In the year 2014 the work of FACES IAP is recognized by SEMARNAT and CONAFOR at the national level with the National Prize for Forest Merit in the category of Civil Society Organizations.
