It was announced the creation of Segalmex, the new Mexican Food Security Agency

Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced Thursday the creation of a new organization called Mexican Food Security (Segalmex), which will replace the companies Liconsa and Diconsa.

The president-elect of Mexico said in a conference from his house of transition in Colonia Roma that the body will be under the responsibility of Ignacio Ovalle Fernández and its creation is part of a food security plan for the country.

Ovalle Fernández, explained the president-elect, has a degree in law, former director of Conasupo, former director of the National Indigenous Institute and former Ambassador of Mexico in Argentina and Cuba.

López Obrador confirmed, in addition, the nomination of Víctor Villalobos as the next secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Miguel García as undersecretary of the same agency.

Víctor Suárez Carrera will be the undersecretary of Self-sufficiency; Raúl Elenes Angulo, Fisheries Commissioner; Salvador Fernández Rivera, general coordinator of Rural Development, and David Monreal, brother of future Moreno senator Ricardo Monreal, will be general coordinator of Livestock.

This team, said López Obrador, will be in charge of meeting the country’s food self-sufficiency, one of the main proposals of his presidential campaign.
